About

Hi there! I’m Rachel, Personal Trainer, Nutrition Coach, and founder of Learn to Lift.
I’ve been coaching strength training to women for well over 10 years now, but I didn’t grow up in the gym. In fact, until I became a personal trainer, I’d never even lifted a dumbbell.
I used to be an all-out cardio bunny; running, hiking, cycling and swimming. I knew that exercise made me feel good, but it wasn’t until I decided to move from a career in marine biology to become a personal trainer, that I began to realise the benefits of strength training.
Fresh out of personal training school and with a new-found love of lifting, I was keen to find out more about other women’s perceptions of strength training. I wanted to understand where their reservations lay and learn what was keeping so many of those who were gym-goers out of the weights area. So, I put together a questionnaire.
The responses I got included comments like, “There are gross guys at every gym that put me off” and, “I need to lose weight first, then it might be worth lifting weights to tone up.” Many of these women were in pursuit of some health and fitness goal or other, but amongst the 64 responses, I found just one other woman who lifted weights.
I couldn’t help thinking that these women would achieve their goals – and a whole heap of additional health benefits – much more quickly if they started strength training...
Fast forward 12 years and I’ve gained a wealth of practical coaching experience, achieved numerous additional qualifications, and helped more than a hundred and fifty different women become strong, confident, pain free and empowered through lifting weights.
Coaching has given me a great sense of purpose and it’s been hugely rewarding. But I've been wanting to share what I’ve learned on my journey more widely, to help make strength training accessible to more women.
And so, the idea for Learn to Lift was born.
Learn to Lift provides an opportunity for women to access the benefits of strength training though quick, simple and effective online courses. Evidence based and experience led, we equip women with the know-how, skills and confidence to achieve – and more importantly maintain – their training results for the long-term.
I hope to see you inside one of our courses soon!
